Exploring a quantum singularity, Voyager becomes trapped in time and is unable to escape. In the meantime, B’Elanna Torres has bloodied the nose of a co-worker in engineering. Chakotay has to deal with the difficult integration of his Maquis crew and himself. In the meantime, the holographic doctor is slowly shrinking, but no one seems to have time to effect repairs. This is a defining episode for Chakotay and B’Elanna’s characters. At the beginning, they are each to a degree resentful and unsure whether they can be a part of Starfleet. By the end, you can tell they are going to stay for at least six seasons. This episode also features an abundance of technobabble that unfortunately substitutes for really clever plotting. Still, great to watch to see Chakotay and Janeway interact – the spark is there.
