The leader of the Hirogen attack has more than just torture on his mind. His plan is to save his nomadic, hunt-o-centric culture by introducing the holodeck hunt with safeties off, so they can settle down, watch a little TV, do a bit of farming, maybe raise some dairy cattle…and just hunt species to the death on weekends. He demands that Janeway repair the holodecks. Janeway replies that she will not – and he will have to kill all the crew first. Janeway convinces him to relinquish command of the ship; in return she agrees to give the holodeck technology to the Hirogen. But the plan backfires when the leader second-in-command, tiring of the simulations and wanting a real kill (plus, he is influenced by a disgusting speech by a holo-nazi) decides to break the cease-fire and keep fighting. Janeway and Kim sabotage the holo-emitters just before the crew is gunned down by Nazis and Hirogen. In the end, a truce is reached, and Janeway gives the Hirogen the holodeck technology.
The is the fourth episode in a row that is a real ‘downer’, although it ends on a hopeful note; the door is left open that perhaps the Hirogen will find a less destructive way to carry out their violent tendencies. But the episode still features a very disgusting speech by a holo-Nazi.
By the way, it’s worth mentioning that the pregnant B’Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson) isn’t wearing a pillow – she really is pregnant.
