5.02 drone

Beaming out of a dangerous nebula, a transporter mishap causes the doctor's holo-emitter to be infected by Seven's nanoprobes; the result is a rapidly maturing Borg drone, which uses the 29th century holo-emitter as a 'brain' and is highly advanced and potentially dangerous. Seven is given the job of assimilating the male into humanity; she views her assignment to the task as a bit ironic, but she works hard at it, and 'One', as he comes to be called, begins to contribute to the crew and to make headway with learning social skills. Seven finds it easy enough to pump gigaquads of knowledge into One, but a little more difficult to make him understand morality - and he is very interested in meeting the Borg. But when a second backup proximity transtater is activated, he unknowingly notifies the Borg, and soon a Borg sphere is hurtling toward Voyager. Hoping to convince One that the Borg are destructive, Janeway shows films and describes the numbers of individuals who have been assimilated. One cannot decide what to do, and it is too late, as the ship has arrived and Voyager is in a tractor beam. Faced with assimilation, Seven explains that she can also hear the voices of the collective, but that they must resist. One agrees, and modifies the shields and weapons, but it isn't enough. Instead, he beams himself in and sends the sphere into the nebula, where it destructs. He manages to beam himself into space surrounded by a force field, and, after being beamed to sick bay, badly injured, the doctor prepares to operate. But One knows that now the Borg are aware of his existence, and, with his advanced technology, will not rest until they have assimilated him. With his first priority to protect Seven and Voyager, One erects a force field and refuses to let the doctor enter to perform the operation, despite Seven's pleas.
