The christening of the astrometrics lab is interrupted by a flaccid attack by a small ship of the Krenim empire. Janeway later meets another, friendly race that is in control of the region, but while making peace, suddenly a temporal wave hits Voyager, causing the alien friends to disappear and the attacking Krenim ship – which was small and ineffective – to become big, powerful, and dangerous. The cause – although Voyager does not yet know this – is a Krenim ‘weapon ship’ that exists outside of space and time, which is creating temporal incursions in an attempt to restore a reality in which the Krenim were dominant in that area of space. Inside Krenim space, Voyager is constantly pursued, attacked, and demolished by Krenim ships, until Tuvok is blinded in an accident, Chakotay has facial hair and Voyager looks like the Bronx. Reluctantly, Janeway asks all non-senior staff to abandon ship in life pods.
