4.21 the omega directive

The discovery of an unusual phenomenon makes Janeway get very secretive, even with the senior staff. It is Omega, a highly unstable and dangerous molecule that was responsible for blowing up a large area of space the last time scientists tried to stabilize it. Even worse, the damage it causes can make warp travel in entire quadrant impossible – making it virtually impossible for Voyager to ever get home. Starfleet’s orders are clear – to destroy the molecule at all cost, and not to share the mission with anyone. Janeway, however, can work with Seven, because Seven already possesses the knowledge through assimilation. For Seven and the Borg, the molecule represents perfection and is the closest thing they have to a god. She is torn between following orders and attempting to stabilize, preserve, and study it. On the eve of a Janeway/Seven shuttle mission, Chakotay convinces Janeway that she is not alone, that she would have more chance of success if Voyager and the rest of the crew were involved. Janeway acquiesces and they find the source – alien scientists who caused another explosion, but are not all that happy that Voyager is intent on destroying the molecule and their work. Voyager is able to contain – and then destroy – the remaining molecules, but not before Janeway has to go head to head with Seven. Just before omega is destroyed, it stabilizes on its own, and Seven looks at its perfection – and feels as if it is looking back at her. Later, Janeway tells her that she may have had her first spiritual experience.
