3.18 darkling

Kes is falling in love with a ‘Traveler’, a man from a race of solo explorers and adventurers. She thinks about leaving the ship, while various members of the crew (Tuvok and the doctor) express concern about her well-being in a protective way. Meanwhile, the doctor has assembled great minds from history (Lord Byron, Ghandi, Socrates, etc.) and has combined their wisdom into his program, unaware that all of these people had a dangerous, darker side that was suppressed. At first, his changes are minor (like when he puts his hand on Torres’ leg in sick bay) but suddenly, before Torres can fix his program, he changes into a Mr. Hyde character. He almost kills Kes’ friend, then disables Torres in an attempt to get her help in purging his program of the original doctor, whom he considers a weakling. Then he kidnaps Kes, planning to run off with her, and erects a scattering beam that prevents Voyager from beaming them back. Tuvok and Chakotay confront him, and Kes tries to convince him that he has been trying to protect her, that his good side is still there, but he denies it, and jumps off the cliff while holding her, but as they are plummeting to their deaths, Janeway breaks through the scattering field and beams them back to the ship – where the doctor is purged of all the offending and dangerous subroutines.

Great acting by Robert Picardo; I love the scene where he is torturing Torres – he’s absolutely evil.

Nit: It is mentioned that Kes broke up with Neelix. I thought when she did that, she was inhabited by the evil Thalin, and it was Thalin doing the talking. Did I miss another episode?
