3.20 favorite son

For some reason, Harry Kim seems very familiar with this previously unexplored region of space. When an innocent ship approaches, Harry suddenly says they are going to attack, even though sensors show no sign they are charging weapons. He re-routs power to his station and start firing, starting a battle. He is confined to quarters, where he has strange dreams – and his face develops spots. The doctor says that his blood chemistry has been changed.

Further study by Tuvok reveals that the alien ship was going to fire, that Kim was right. As three more alien ships approach, Kim directs the still badly damaged Voyager to a nearby planet. He knows the name of the planet and he knows they will be safe there. Sure enough, a ship emerges from the planet’s surface and disables all three attacking ships. The ship is manned by an all-good-looking-woman crew – they know of Harry and invite him down. There, they reveal that Harry is one of them. He was conceived on this world, then transported as an embryo to earth, and implanted in a human mother (an alien abduction). This has drawn him back to explore space and return home. The alien women want him to stay, and express this by fetching him drinks and touching him a lot. The only other man there (male babies are rare) always has a couple of babes on his arm and assures Kim that it is great and he is enjoying himself. Kim decides to stay for a while, to enjoy almost being seduced. Meanwhile, Voyager leaves orbit to confront the other aliens without Kim on board (which is why they were firing). They reach a truce, but the aliens also warn them that Kim will not be returning. Back at the planet, Voyager finds a series of satellites have been erected to produce an impenetrable security grid. They can’t even get a message to Harry. Thinking that Voyager has yet to return, Harry decides to stay the night. When he wakes up, he finds two women watching him. Realizing he is a prisoner, he tries to escape, and finds the other male’s drained body – the males are only useful for their ability to have children, and the genetic extraction process kills them. On Voyager, the doctor has also discovered that Kim was not born on this world; he was recently infected with a virus that implanted alien DNA in him to make it seem so. Harry’s escape fails, and he finds himself surrounded by beautiful and deadly women. Just as they are about to kill him, Voyager punches a hole in the security grid and beams him out, then scoots away to leave the two races to fight it out amongst themselves.

Nits: How come sensors showed no signs the ship was charging weapons, but Harry picked up an energy surge? How come the doctor first says he can see the genetic material in early scans of Harry, then says he can’t? How come, in the earlier confrontation, the evil alien ship quickly disabled three attacking ships, but at the end, the evil alien ship has to stop to fight with the attack ships, rather than just quickly disabling them and then trashing Voyager with their powerful weapons?
