A long-range probe informs Voyager of something they were dreading; they are about to enter Borg space. It is vast, but there is one option to avoid it; a short but turbulent corridor they nickname The Northwest Passage, which is void of Borg activity. As they head for it, 15 Borg cubes rush to them, but pass them like they are running from a fire. Soon, long-range sensors report that all of the Borg cubes have been destroyed. Going back to investigate, Voyager finds all the Borg dead or dieing, killed by Species 8472. Unable to assimilate the species, the Borg know little about it. An away team of Chakotay, Tuvok and Kim just make it back to the ship alive before being attacked by 8472 – Kim is fatally injured, his body being consumed from inside. While the doctor works on a cure based on Borg nanoprobes, Janeway has to decide whether to turn back or keep going. Against Chakotay’s wishes (voiced by his childhood fable of the scorpion), she devises a plan whereby Voyager will form an alliance with the Borg and work together to create a weapon which will destroy 8472, using the same nanoprobes that are curing Kim, in return for safe passage through Borg space. Encountering a Borg cube, Janeway is beamed over, where her negotiations are successful, with Voyager being tractored along.
